Job Position: Mechanical Engineer II – Weld Engineer

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Engineer II – Weld Engineer designs, develops, documents, and supports the manufacture of GP:50 pressure transducers, transmitters, and related instrumentation used in aerospace, defense, industrial, and other high-reliability applications.

This position serves as a technical resource for welded and hermetically sealed assemblies, with emphasis on weld joint design, welding process development, qualification, manufacturing support, inspection, failure analysis, and continuous improvement. The engineer works across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Production, Supply Chain, and Customer Service to ensure welded pressure-boundary and structural components satisfy drawing, specification, workmanship, strength, dimensional, and leak-tightness requirements.

Key Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and develop pressure transducer and transmitter products, subassemblies, components, pressure ports, adapters, housings, sensing assemblies, fixtures, and related mechanical features.
    • Design and review welded components and assemblies, including joint geometry, material combinations, fit-up, penetration, heat input, shielding, distortion control, dimensional requirements, and acceptance criteria.
    • Evaluate pressure boundaries and welded assemblies for proof pressure, burst pressure, fatigue, thermal effects, stress concentration, material compatibility, and manufacturing variation.
    • Provide engineering support for precision welding of stainless steels, nickel-based alloys such as Inconel, and other materials used in hermetic and pressure-containing assemblies.
    • Develop, document, qualify, and improve applicable welding and joining processes, which may include GTAW/TIG, laser, resistance, electron beam, or other precision processes.
    • Create and maintain controlled drawings, bills of material, weld requirements, manufacturing instructions, inspection criteria, test documentation, engineering reports, and process specifications.
    • Review customer specifications, purchase-order requirements, source drawings, qualification requirements, and internal standards to identify design, welding, inspection, test, material, marking, cleanliness, and documentation requirements.
    • Design and verify welding fixtures, alignment tooling, purge or shielding fixtures, inspection fixtures, pressure-test adapters, and other production aids.
    • Define and support weld inspection and verification methods such as visual and dimensional inspection, leak testing, pressure testing, liquid penetrant inspection, radiography, metallographic sectioning, and destructive testing, as applicable.
    • Support development and execution of ATP, QTP, DTP, qualification, proof-pressure, burst-pressure, leak, environmental, vibration, shock, and functional test activities where mechanical design, weld integrity, or test setup is involved.
    • Provide engineering dispositions for weld-related nonconformances, parts, assemblies, drawings, inspection results, test results, and manufacturing issues through established quality-system processes.
    • Lead or support investigations involving leakage, cracking, porosity, incomplete fusion, insufficient penetration, contamination, oxidation, distortion, dimensional change, or other weld-related conditions.
    • Develop corrective and preventive actions using inspection results, process parameters, tooling, material condition, metallurgical evaluation, test data, and manufacturing history.
    • Support new-product introduction and production transfer by assessing design readiness, weld-process readiness, tooling, inspection, qualification, test, training, and configuration-control needs.
    • Work directly with engineers, weld operators, technicians, machinists, inspectors, and suppliers to translate engineering requirements into repeatable and inspectable manufacturing processes.
    • Support supplier qualification and technical review of externally provided welded components or special processes.
    • Prepare clear technical communications, engineering reports, customer-facing explanations, internal memoranda, and documentation packages.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Independently owns assigned design, weld-engineering, and manufacturing-support tasks from requirement review through controlled implementation.
  • Produces accurate, manufacturable, inspectable, and configuration-controlled engineering documentation.
  • Establishes practical weld requirements and process controls appropriate to product risk and customer requirements.
  • Improves weld consistency, manufacturability, testability, documentation quality, yield, and first-pass success where practical.
  • Identifies technical and manufacturing risks early, communicates them clearly, and recommends effective corrective or preventive actions.
  • Provides responsive technical support for production, quality, customer inquiries, audits, engineering changes, and supplier issues.
  • Strengthens GP:50 design and welding practices through standardization, mentoring, disciplined engineering judgment, and continuous improvement.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • Typically three to seven years of relevant experience in mechanical design, welding engineering, manufacturing engineering, aerospace/defense, precision manufacturing, pressure instrumentation, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with welded hardware, controlled engineering documentation, production support, and specification- or customer-driven design activity preferred.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Working knowledge of mechanical design, engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance review, material selection, machining, inspection, and document control.
  • Working knowledge of weld joint preparation, fit-up, heat input, shielding, penetration, distortion, residual stress, material compatibility, and weld quality.
  • Ability to recognize and investigate weld conditions such as porosity, cracking, incomplete fusion, incomplete penetration, contamination, oxidation, distortion, and leakage.
  • Ability to read and apply weld symbols, welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records, operator qualification requirements, customer specifications, and internal standards.
  • Ability to interpret commercial, military, aerospace, customer, and internal requirements and convert them into clear product and manufacturing requirements.
  • Familiarity with weld inspection and verification methods, including visual inspection, liquid penetrant inspection, radiography, metallographic sectioning, leak testing, pressure testing, and destructive testing, as applicable.
  • Ability to develop and review component, assembly, tooling, and fixture drawings; bills of material; manufacturing instructions; test procedures; and engineering reports.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, or similar 2D/3D design software, plus Microsoft Office and company ERP, document-control, quality, and manufacturing systems.
  • Familiarity with AS9100-style expectations for traceability, configuration control, engineering change implementation, nonconforming material review, corrective action, and audit or customer support.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate professionally, explain technical issues clearly, and work effectively across technical and operational functions.
