Job Position: Regulatory Compliance and Certification Engineer
Position Summary
The Regulatory Compliance and Certification Engineer is responsible for the development, maintenance, renewal, and expansion of third-party product certifications across a wide range of international regulatory standards and approval agencies. This role requires strong technical expertise and a thorough understanding of hazardous location approvals (e.g., Intrinsic Safety, Explosion / Flameproof, Non-Sparking / Non-Incendive), EMC compliance, pressure equipment standards, functional safety requirements, hygienic certifications, and marine approvals.
Working cross-functionally with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Suppliers, and external certification bodies, this individual ensures products meet all applicable regulatory, industry, and customer requirements throughout the entire product lifecycle
Key Responsibilities
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regulatory Compliance & Certification
- Lead all design activities related to obtaining, maintaining, renewing, and expanding global third-party product certifications and approvals for pressure transmitters and related products, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and industry standards.
- Manage relationships with external regulatory agencies, notified bodies, test laboratories, and certification organizations, including but not limited to:
- UL / FM / CSA
- ATEX / IECex
- CE (EMC / PED / RoHS)
- SIL
- 3A Sanitary Standards
- DNV / Marine Approvals
- Canadian Design Registration / CRN
- Coordinate product testing, audits, inspections, documentation reviews, and certification submittals to ensure product performance and regulatory compliance requirements are achieved.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with RoHS, REACH, conflict minerals regulations, and other applicable environmental and material compliance directives, including material sourcing, product testing, documentation, assessment, and reporting requirements.
- Interpret regulatory standards and communicate technical compliance requirements to engineering, quality, manufacturing, product development, and supply chain teams.
- Monitor changes to applicable regulatory standards and proactively assess the impact on existing and future products, identifying compliance risks and recommending appropriate actions and resource requirements.
- Support factory audits, quality system assessments, and external agency reviews related to regulatory approvals and certifications.
- Provide training and guidance to internal teams regarding compliance regulations, certification requirements, and best practices to support ongoing compliance initiatives and internal systems.
Technical documentation & compliance records
- Develop, maintain, and update certification-related engineering documentation, including:
- Technical construction files
- Hazardous location control drawings
- Production drawings & build procedures
- Risk assessments
- SIL / FMEDA documentation
- EMC test plans and reports
- Pressure calculations and compliance documentation
- Installation manuals and labeling requirements
- Agency application packages
- Declarations of Conformity
- Ensure certification and compliance documentation remains current and aligned with released product configurations and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensure supporting production and manufacturing documentation complies with all applicable regulatory and certification standards.
Product development support
- Perform design work as needed, or assist and guide design engineering disciplines, to develop product solutions that comply with hazardous location requirements, EMC performance standards, pressure boundary integrity, functional safety, environmental protection, and product reliability requirements.
- Work closely with engineering, product development, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure compliance requirements are incorporated early in the product design and manufacturing process.
- Provide technical guidance to evaluate whether specific product designs and configurations comply with applicable regulatory standards and certification requirements.
- Manage compliance-related projects in collaboration with internal teams and external agencies to ensure successful certification, product performance, and regulatory compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or a related technical field), along with a minimum of 5 years of experience in regulatory compliance, product certification, quality engineering, or a related engineering role. Experience with hazardous approvals, RoHS, REACH, and conflict minerals compliance is strongly preferred. Candidates should have knowledge of applicable UL, CSA, FM, IECEx, ATEX, NFPA, OSHA, and ISO standards, along with a strong understanding of technical drawings, product testing, and engineering documentation. Experience working with regulatory agencies and third-party testing laboratories, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and ERP/document control systems, is preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Regulatory compliance leadership and product certification management, with strong knowledge of hazardous materials and product compliance standards.
- Technical problem-solving skills, including risk assessment and mitigation, root cause analysis, and audit coordination.
- Strong cross-functional communication and collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.
- Standards interpretation and application to ensure compliance with regulatory and industry requirements.
- Technical documentation development, including mechanical and electrical drawings, compliance reports, and quality system documentation.
- Project management experience supporting compliance initiatives and certification activities.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office 365, manufacturing systems, and database management software.
- Ability to read, interpret, and create mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Experience working in regulated environments with product design, documentation, and quality systems/processes.
